Nestled near the top of Battle Mountain which crests at 11,507 feet feet above sea level. these empty buildings stand as a silent monument to Colorado's mining history.  The Gilman town site is at an estimated elevation of 9100 feet above sea level.  No one lives there now and the only road into the town is closed and IT IS PRIVATE PROPERTY  please respect that.  It is located south of the town of Minturn on US Highway 24.  There
are several turn outs from which the town can be viewed from the highway right of way. The exchange to access this road is just west of Vail Colorado on Interstate 70.  In December of 1964 when I lived there and worked in the mine, the snow reached a  depth of ten feet.  The thermometers in town said  it was 50 degrees below zero at night and then it warmed up to 35 below Zero Fahrenheit in the day time.  That cold snap lasted for ten days to two weeks.  While it lasted only the cars that were kept in the few garages in town would start.
